Spirituality at Meanwood CE Primary School
At Meanwood CE Primary School, we believe that spirituality is an integral aspect of being human. Spiritual development helps our children understand themselves, make sense of the world and find meaning in their experiences.
Our school definition of spirituality is:
“Spirituality is an aspect of being human. It is a way individuals seek and express meaning and purpose. It weaves together moments of connectedness with the self, others, the world and the significant or sacred.”
How Spirituality Flourishes at Meanwood
We nurture spirituality by helping children recognise and reflect on four key areas of connectedness:
Self – developing self-awareness, inner reflection and a sense of personal worth
Others – understanding, empathy and the moral beauty found in relationships
The World – awe, curiosity and appreciation of the natural world and human creativity
The Significant or Sacred – exploring big questions, beliefs and moments of transcendence, both religious and non‑religious
These dimensions of spirituality are deeply rooted in our Christian vision and brought to life through our core values:
Open Hearts
We encourage compassion, empathy and love in all relationships. Through open-hearted reflection and shared experiences, children learn to care deeply for themselves and others, recognise moral goodness and celebrate the uniqueness of every individual.
Open Minds
We promote curiosity, questioning and thoughtful exploration. By embracing diverse ideas, worldviews and perspectives, children develop the confidence to wonder, reflect and seek meaning—whether considering the beauty of the world, life’s big questions, or their own developing beliefs.
Open Arms
We welcome, include and embrace our whole community. Children learn that spirituality grows when we accept others, respect difference and create space for every voice. Open Arms encourages a sense of belonging and shared responsibility for the community and the wider world.
Our Approach in Practice
Spirituality at Meanwood is woven through daily school life—collective worship, classroom reflection, creative learning, outdoor experiences, and pop‑up moments of wonder. We create opportunities for children to pause, consider, question and appreciate the depth and richness of life.
Through Open Hearts, Open Minds and Open Arms, we guide our children toward a spiritual journey that is thoughtful, inclusive and rooted in meaning.
